Case Study 2 - Get Organised (GO) Project

Envisaged as ideal for national roll out, this project was the subject of an unsuccessful bid in 1999, ‘Rossendale A Centre for Healthy Living’, a composite bid for health and social enterprise involving over 40 community groups across Rossendale that would provide wide ranging health benefits to the region.
This is a partnership project designed to develop infrastructure, avoid duplication, plug gaps and build long-term sustainability.

It embraces 27 bodies ranging from Primary Care Trust’s, Business Link and voluntary and community groups, which share an interest in the projects desirable outcomes. The project shares good practice and increases collaboration and is based on initiatives that already have demonstrable success and sustainability.
Rossendale was unfortunate not to get the bid and in the meantime the fundamental aims of the project and the underlying needs of the community are still as strong as before, if not more so.

Aims

1) GO envisages the integration of health and care services with support services in a way that we believe can raise both the quality and cost effectiveness of provision.
2) To harness these services to improve the health and therefore, quality of life, of people who are not in the workplace due to illness.
3) To improve the economy of the region by creating and facilitating a wide range of employment/business opportunities for those individuals whose condition has been improved by our initiatives.
REAL has been supporting the aims of the project through its current projects including:
East Lancashire Integrated Health Care – East Lancashire Pathways to Work - see case study
Multi Agency Building Initiative – see case study

Background

The ‘GO’ Project was launched as a concept in October 2003. The launch meeting attracted 43 representatives from Social Services, Lancashire County Council, FE colleges, primary and acute care, University of Salford, CVS, Local Strategic Partnership, Local Authority, Teaching PCT, Job Centre Plus and other voluntary and community organisations in related fields. All 43 requested to be kept informed.

What: Coordinate the development of social enterprise projects in the healthcare sector that enhance community welfare and cohesion.
Why: Increase the East Lancashire economically active workforce by reducing long-term benefit claimants.
Increase the availability of, and access to, home-based care services in East Lancashire.
How: A co-ordination structure that facilitates:
• Flexible employment opportunities appropriate to the needs of the long term sick.
• Start-up and business support for social enterprises that contribute to the overall objectives, including:
- Coaching to optimise sustainability.
- Access to appropriate business expertise.
- Back-office services (finance, marketing, administration).
• Services to patients and carers that offer:
- Therapeutic gain, empowerment to remain at home and reduction in demand for bedded provision.
- Ranges of direct and supplementary care services for older people and palliative care for disease other than cancer and life limiting illness.
• Integration of services for benefit of patient and provider – seamless care for the community.
